Want to Lose Weight? Turn Off the TV
May 12 2009, 06:57 AM

It's a fact. When you watch TV your NEATis at its lowest point. You could correct this by watching TV only while riding a stationary bike—or, better yet, walking or running on a treadmill. However, that's not very practical, so you need to just cut down on your time spent watching TV.

TV is also full of food cues. Not only the food ads can stimulate your cravings, but certain scenes or places can stimulate your thoughts of food.

Probably the worst thing you can do while watching TV is eat. While you're concentrating on the TV, your brain isn't taking notice of the meal you are eating. If you don't remember your meal, youe more likely to want a snack (who said snack? I mean junk food!) later. In England, an experiment was carried out in which people consumed 400 calories for lunch;  half of the people watched TV as they ate. Later, they were offered cookies. The group who watched TV while eating lunch, not surprisingly, consumed more cookies!

It makes sense , that any multitasking during meals would have the same effect. So, the next time you sit down to eat, sit back, relax and fully enjoy your meal.
